When the things you are supposed to do to grow your business just make you tired

When you are building a business, it is incredibly easy to get distracted by the sheer volume of things you are told you should be doing. You look around and it feels like everyone is talking about landing pages, Facebook ads, or how often you need to be posting on social media to remain visible. There is this unspoken rule that if you aren't out there constantly shouting into the digital void, your business won't survive. We collect all these tasks and strategies, wearing them like a heavy sales hat that doesn't fit our personalities, and we wonder why we feel so exhausted at the end of the day.
Now, most of us didn't start our businesses to become full-time content creators or high-pressure salespeople. We started them because we have a specific gift, a calling, or an impact we want to make in the world. Yet, we get stuck in the mechanics of trying to look impressive online.
In my seventeen years as a coach, I have noticed a very distinct pattern. I have never once had a paying client hire me as a result of a social media post or a cold ad. Every single person who has ever trusted me to guide them did so because a real relationship existed.
When we’re in full on business mode, we tend to forget that clients are people. They aren't leads, they aren't numbers on a dashboard, and they aren't traffic on a website. They are humans who need to feel a sense of safety, trust, and connection before they part with their precious time and hard-earned money. And that level of trust rarely happens through a polished grid post or a clever caption. It happens when we slow down enough to have an actual conversation with someone, sitting across from them without an agenda.
What changes when we stop looking for clients and start looking for relationships? The way you feel, the way you show up, and your client attraction factor. The person you are talking to doesn't need to be the person who buys from you. When you focus on being genuinely interested in someone else - asking questions, listening to what they are facing, and offering a resource or a connection just because you care - you become memorable.
You don't have to pitch them. They simply become a part of your ecosystem. They remember your generosity, and down the road, when they run into someone who needs exactly what you do, they become your ambassador who passes your name along because they trust who you are as a person. Note that the person they refer to you (even if they look you up on social media) doesn’t book a chat with you because they trust you, they do it because they trust that ambassador (likely because they have a relationship with them). Aha!
Imagine how much pressure we could release if we just stopped trying so hard to be visible to thousands of strangers, and focused instead on being truly present with a few individuals.
Something further to think about: Have you ever noticed how much risk a person feels when they are considering making a major change or hiring a guide? The psychological risk sky-rockets the moment they think about investing in themselves. Shouting louder on the internet doesn't lower that barrier of fear. You know what does? Human connection.
We talked about this exact dynamic recently on the podcast. It is a reminder that we don't need to engage in high-pressure tactics or treat people like transactions to build something meaningful. We can simply show up as ourselves, with a servant's heart, and let the relationships do what turns out to be not-so-heavy lifting.
