The Comfort Trap and the Sneaky Fear of Success

A recent guest on my podcast walked through her little test for every task on your plate:

  • Are you excellent at it?

  • Do you love it?

  • Does it move the needle in your business?

And I heard myself admit, out loud, on the recording, that I have a fair number of tasks I love to do that don’t move a single needle. I just like doing them. So I keep doing them.

The work we’re good at and enjoy becomes the cozy place we hide from the work that grows us. I’m going to call it what it is: a Comfort Trap. Those tasks are easy and fun, and I’m very good at them, so they make me feel like a smartypants.

But am I subconsciously avoiding moving the needle in my business? Yikes! I love uncovering the deep shit like that, even when I thought I’d already worked through it. So here’s what I did.

Step one: What am I doing, and why am I doing it?

I listed everything it takes to run my business and put each task through the three-question test. Here’s a sample from my marketing list:

Marketing Task Excellent at it Love to do it Moves the needle Solution
Podcast production Yes No Yes Assistant
Social media No Hell, no Somewhat Assistant
Networking Yes Yes Yes Do it in alignment with how I roll
Guest on podcasts Yes Yes Yes Use AI to find aligned podcasts and network with the host

Now I have a much better handle on what’s mine to do and what’s better off in someone else’s hands.

Step two: What am I avoiding, and why?

Then I looked at my tasks again, this time with honesty and curiosity, to learn more about myself. What am I avoiding? Is it because it feels out of alignment, or is it fear?

A part of you can genuinely want something while another part works hard to keep you safe from what comes with it. That’s the sneaky fear of success. I know, it sounds silly. We plan and strategize and network and do all the stuff at our desks in pursuit of success. So why would a part of us sabotage our own motivation and focus? Here’s why:

1. Success changes your identity. Maybe you’ve spent years being the dependable one, the underdog, the helper. What happens when you become more visible, successful, powerful, wealthy, fulfilled, or free?

2. Success creates consequences.

More clients ⟶ more responsibility

More visibility ⟶ more judgment

More money ⟶ changed relationships

More freedom ⟶ fewer excuses

Doing the thing you’re here to do ⟶ letting go of something you’ve been doing for someone else, and maybe disappointing them

3. Success feels unsustainable. There’s a belief that success requires a level of effort you can’t keep up, and it feeds what I call the Lazy Entrepreneur persona. That’s the nagging thought, “Maybe I’m just too lazy, and I don’t have what it takes,” along with all the shame that tags along with it. Speaking of shame…

4. Success triggers embedded shame. Deep-seated feelings of unworthiness, often rooted in childhood, can make you question whether you deserve what you desire, and that drains your motivation and sabotages your focus.

Step three: Make it safe to do the needle-moving stuff

Over the years, I’ve amassed a toolbox full of tools and concepts that either lessen or obliterate fear altogether. Here are a few that come to mind for making the needle-moving stuff feel safer.

  • Pause and get curious. Watch your own behavior like an observer, without judgment, and say to yourself, “Isn’t that interesting?”

  • Lower the stakes. Let go of the make-or-break energy and the big expectations that it has to work, or else.

  • Treat it like an experiment. If it flops, you’ve learned something about the approach, and your worth stays right where it was.

  • Borrow from your wins. How could you approach this new thing the same way you approached something that worked?

  • Find an aligned approach. If you can’t bag it or barter it, how can you do it in a way that feels more like you?

  • Redefine success around who you are and what’s right for you. This one makes a GIANT difference! After all, if you’re chasing someone else’s definition of success, chances are you’re doing things that are either unneccessary or not in alignment with who you are. Lucky for you, I’ve got just the tool for you! And you can do it in about 30 minutes with my free download, Success on Your Own Terms:  A simple, straightforward guide to redefining success™.

Living Above and Beyond

My guest this week on Conversations Worth Your While™ is Lady Jen Du Plessis, an expert at getting you out of the weeds of your business so you can live above it, and then beyond it. Above is where you spend your time on the part you love, the coaching or the selling or whatever lit you up in the first place. Beyond is whatever your life is asking for. Sleeping in. Travel. Starting the next thing. More time with the people you love, right now, while you’re still building. [Catch the full conversation here.]

So I’m sitting with a question this week, and I’d love for you to sit with it too: What’s one task you’re holding onto because it feels good to do it, even while it keeps you from what matters more?

And if you’d like to talk through what success might cost you (or what you’re afraid it will), I’d love to hop on a Clarity Chat with you. You can find a time that works for you right here.

Warmly,

Linda
