Leaving COMPLICATED behind in favor of SIMPLICITY

I’m excited for 2019; for what it will bring and for what will open up in the space I’ve made by letting go of what no longer serves me.

I do a fair amount of self-coaching (you’ve got to live it to give it), during which my creative self comes up with new tools I can use with my clients (more about that another time). As I self-coached on New Years Day, I spontaneously created a great tool for myself through which my word for the year was revealed to me:

Fitting. Because in the pursuit of perfection (who me?), I often make things too complicated. Which is why you haven’t yet seen Go Big Academy (GBA) come to life (yet).

Sure, I started out with a simple idea – a one stop online site, rich with videos and live chats with me where you can get the right information in the right order to help you get out of your own way so you can Unleash Your Bigness™.

Then I thought, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if there were a spotlight segment which changed each month? I’d teach a free live webinar, have a corresponding song lists and worksheets.” Then I thought, “I know! I could offer a series of free 5-day challenges. It’d be a great to market GBA and I could even reuse the content.” Then I thought, “I’ll create a big community and maybe even host a weekend retreat!”

Yes, it can be done. Yes, I have the required systems in place. Yes, I know how to do all of these things. I’ve been on the marketing funnel merry go round so long that I’m nauseous.

Before I knew it, 6 months had gone by and GBA was nothing more than a notebook of excellent ideas and a skeleton website. I had designed the luxury liner of membership sites while my own engine had run out of steam and my potential clients would probably be super happy on a sail boat.

If you’ve ever started a big project that you just know in your heart will be amazing for your clients, but find yourself resistant to working on it, you’ve probably made it too complicated.

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery

How can you simplify? Simple.

  1. Refocus on your intent. Make sure your “why” fits who you are, not who you think you’re supposed to be. Doing something to prove your relevance or feed your ego is not a good reason to do it. What’s important to you? How have you gotten away from that? Get back to you and what comes natural to you.
  2. Take a minimalist mindset. Take away anything that isn’t essential to your end goal. Create your “Must Have” list. For instance, if I were to move into a 400 square foot space, what couldn’t I do without? My piano. Coffee maker. Laptop. Printer. Speakers. Bed. Essential clothing. In the same light, I can make a list of what’s essential to get GBA off the ground by asking myself, “If I could only share 10 essential things with my GBA students, what would they be?”
  3. Create a “Love to Have” list. These are all of your best ideas – you know, the ones that make you light up. Then take a phased approach. Schedule them into phases 2 through 4. As you approach each phase, go back to step 1, above, and SIMPLIFY.
  4. Slow down. Take your time. Feel your way. Follow what pulls you in. Stop doing what you intuitively know you should stop doing. There’s no hurry.

I hope to birth Go Big Academy sometime in 2019. I don’t know when. I’m going by feel. In the mean time, I’m happy to be serving and sharing my gifts.

Wishing you a 2019 where less is more…
